Case Analysis and the Normative Aspect of Professional Development

In service-based professions such as teaching, medicine and law, practitioners are encouraged to be reflective in their practice. That is, considering the complexity and consequential impact of their work, it is advisable for practitioners to think and act in deliberate ways. Reflective practice is used as a means for developing new skills, ensuring quality service, and dealing with occupational stressors. Research has shown that structured reflective practice, such as in the practice of case conferencing, leads to improved decision-making skills, reasoning skills and is protective against burnout.

Interpreters are very late to the practice of case conferencing and other types of structured reflection and are only beginning to recognize the need for and benefits of reflective practice. However, very few practitioners, educators and trainers have learned effective tools for analyzing cases. This presentation explains the need for and some of the techniques of case conferencing. Attending this workshop will help to raise awareness around the need for structured reflective practice and will offer further learning opportunities to develop case conferencing leader skills.

Learning Objectives:

  • Distinguish terms such as case report, case analysis, and case conferencing

  • Define aspects of practitioner development of normative, formative, and restorative

  • Explain the difference between Schön’s knowing-in-action and knowledge-in-action

  • Identify at least one of Schön’s ‘applied sciences’ applicable to case analysis


About the Speaker:

Robyn K. Dean, CI/CT, PhD

 

Robyn K. Dean, CI/CT, PhD has been a nationally certified signed language interpreter for over thirty-five years with particular service in the field of healthcare. Her scholarship in decision-making and ethics in community interpreting is recognized internationally. Dr. Dean has over twenty publications, all of which focus on the theoretical and pedagogical frameworks used to advance the practice of community interpreters. Dr. Dean is currently an Associate Professor at the Rochester Institute of Technology, where she is the lead instructor on the Institute’s postgraduate degree in healthcare interpretation.
