YU ALEO RIOUX Running for Director of the NCIHC Board of Directors
Yu Aloe L. Rioux, Ph. D., is keen on promoting and enhancing language access in health care and in general in the United States, and would like to see St. Joseph Hospital, Covenant Health better represented and acknowledged within the National Council on Interpreting in Health Care (NCIHC). Becoming a board director at the NCIHC is one step forward towards the service passion. Dr. Rioux has a long and varied work experience, ranging from interpreting (medical, legal, educational as well as social services), interpreter training, translating, teaching (English, Chinese, geography, and history), advising, curriculum development, and consulting in higher education. With a BA in English (language and literature) in China, MA in American Studies, and Ph. D. in (Human) Geography in the U. S., Dr. Rioux has a good understanding of cultural differences and challenges. Enhancing cross-cultural understanding has always been her passion. She has initiated and participated in cultural and academic exchange programs, and has been invited to relevant guest lectures. Dr. Rioux has published both in the English and the Chinese languages, including journal articles, book chapters, edited volumes, and translated monographs. Her research interests range from language acquisition to cross-cultural studies of the environment, health care, and the cultural geography of tourism, economic development and landscape in China. The manuscript of her book chapter, “Crisis Management with Chinese Characteristics: from SARS to COVID-19” (in The Science and Technology of the Pandemic, Springer Publishing), is submitted for publication. Dr. Rioux is able to bring her expertise and years of work experience to the NCIHC, integrating her passion and her service into the mission of NCIHC by serving as a board director.
