INDIRA SULTANIC
Running for Director of the NCIHC Board of Directors

Dear NCIHC Nominating Committee and Voting Members: I am writing to express my strong interest in serving as a Director for the National Council on Interpreting in Health Care (NCIHC). With over 15 years of experience as a Spanish<>English and Bosnian<>English healthcare and community interpreter, translator, educator, and researcher, I bring a wealth of expertise and a deep commitment to advancing our profession. My unique combination of academic credentials, practical experience, and leadership roles equips me to contribute meaningfully to the continued growth and success of NCIHC.I hold a PhD in Translation Studies, a credential that has allowed me to explore the theoretical and practical dimensions of translation and interpreting from a scholarly perspective. My research has, in large part, focused on healthcare interpreter education and training, and bridging the gap between academia and practice, ensuring that the work we do as professionals is informed by rigorous evidence and that it addresses the needs of the diverse communities we serve. Coming from a multicultural and multilingual background, along with my education and professional experience, I bring a nuanced understanding of the importance of culture in the provision of equitable care. This perspective enables me to advocate effectively for the principles of diversity, equity, and inclusion, which are at the heart of my professional and personal values. Throughout my career, I have actively sought opportunities to elevate the healthcare interpreting profession and to support fellow practitioners. I have served as a board member, and Vice President of the California Healthcare Interpreting Association. In these roles, I worked collaboratively with my peers to create initiatives that supported professional development and raised awareness about the importance of qualified and certified healthcare interpreters. Additionally, my service on the conference committee allowed me to contribute to the design and implementation of events that fostered learning, dialogue, and innovation within our community. My passion for fair and equitable access to services and information, and treatment of all fellow humans, has been a guiding force in my career. I have advocated for increased language access in community organizations, and have worked to ensure that the services provided were equitable, accessible, and inclusive. If elected, I will bring this same passion and a collaborative approach to our collective work. I am dedicated to listening to the needs of our members, fostering partnerships, and championing initiatives that enhance the visibility and credibility of our profession. My goal is to ensure that NCIHC continues to be a leading voice for healthcare interpreters and stakeholder, driving positive change within our field and beyond. Thank you for considering my nomination. I am excited about the opportunity to serve and to contribute my experience, expertise, and passion to the ongoing success of NCHIC. I am confident that my skills and values align with the NCIHC mission and goals, and I look forward to the possibility of working together to create a more equitable and inclusive future for our profession. Sincerely, Indira Sultanić, PhD, CHI™-Spanish.
