Cognitive Interpreting Skills Testing and Applications for Training Programs
With guest speaker: Natalya Mytareva, MA, ICE-CCP
CCHI introduced a new performance credential for healthcare interpreters, CoreCHI-Performance™ in 2023, with a monolingual standardized oral performance test in English (English-to-English or EtoE). This innovative approach provides an assessment mechanism for interpreters of less common languages, where creating a dual-language performance exam is often unfeasible. The EtoE exam evaluates interpreting readiness through indirect methods that assess cognitive interpreting skills rather than through direct interpreting. With the sunset of the knowledge-based CoreCHI™ credential in 2025-2027, all interpreters will be required to pass a performance exam in order to get certified. This would increase the demand for all skill-building training programs, and create a new demand for programs that teach cognitive interpreting skills in an explicit format.
The presenter will discuss various components of the EtoE exam such as paraphrasing, listening comprehension, shadowing, memory capacity, and reading comprehension, and how they can be incorporated into interpreter training programs. Teaching techniques for different training modalities and formats will be discussed, e.g., live webinar, self-paced online course, a conference presentation, longer in-person or live online course. The presenter will explain the importance of feedback and illustrate types of feedback relevant to improving cognitive interpreting skills. Concepts presented in this webinar are applicable to all training providers regardless of the certification status of their learners.

About the Speaker:
Natalya Mytareva, MA, ICE-CCP
Natalya Mytareva, MA, ICE-CCP, is the Executive Director of the Certification Commission for Healthcare Interpreters, and a Commissioner of the National Commission for Certifying Agencies. From 2000-2013, Natalya was Communications Director at the International Institute of Akron, a refugee resettlement agency in Ohio. She developed and taught courses for healthcare and court interpreters during her tenure. She received the 2023 Language Access Champion NCIHC’s award. Natalya is a Russian interpreter/translator and started her career as an instructor of translation courses at Volgograd State University (Russia) in 1991. She holds a combined BA/MA degree in Philology & Teaching English as a Foreign Language.
